چکیده

Knowing the best 1Dmodel of the crustal and uppermantle structure is useful not only for routine hypocenter determination, but also for linearized joint inversions of hypocenters and 3D crustal structure, where a good choiceof the initialmodel canbevery important. Here,we tested thecombinationof a simpleGA inversionwith the widely used HYPO71 program to find the best three-layer model (upper crust, lower crust, and upper mantle)byminimizing theoverall P-andS-arrival residuals, using local andregional earthquakes in twoareasof the Brazilian shield. Results from the Tocantins Province (Central Brazil) and the southern border of the S~ ao Francisco craton (SEBrazil) indicated anaverage crustal thicknessof 38and43 km, respectively, consistentwith previous estimates from receiver functions and seismic refraction lines. The GA+HYPO71 inversion produced correct Vp/Vs ratios (1.73 and 1.71, respectively), as expected fromWadati diagrams. Tests with synthetic data showed that themethod is robust for the crustal thickness, Pn velocity, andVp/Vs ratiowhenusing eventswith distanceuptoabout400 km,despite thesmallnumberofeventsavailable (7and22, respectively).Thevelocities of the upper and lower crusts, however, are less well constrained. Interestingly, in the Tocantins Province, the GA+HYPO71 inversion showeda secondary solution (localminimum) for the average crustal thickness, besides the global minimum solution, which was caused by the existence of two distinct domains in the Central Brazil with very different crustal thicknesses. & 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Crustal and upper mantle structure of southernmost South America inferred from regional waveform inversion

[1] We determine the crustal and upper mantle structure of southern South America by inverting regional seismograms recorded by the Seismic Experiment in Patagonia and Antarctica. We present a waveform inversion method that utilizes a niching genetic algorithm. The niching genetic algorithm differs from the traditional genetic algorithm in that the inversion is performed in multiple subpopulati...

Basin Structure Estimation by Waveform Modeling: Forward and Inverse Methods

We introduce a technique for using broadband seismograms recorded from earthquakes at local and regional distances to refine basin structure. For the region outside the basin, we assume a one-dimensional (1D) crustal model and analytical techniques (GRT) to propagate the energy from sources to the basin edge where the motions are then interfaced with a (2D) finite-difference algorithm (Wen and ...

Non-linear stochastic inversion of regional Bouguer anomalies by means of Particle Swarm Optimization: Application to the Zagros Mountains

Estimating the lateral depth variations of the Earth’s crust from gravity data is a non-linear ill-posed problem. The ill-posedness of the problem is due to the presence of noise in the data, and also the non-uniqueness of the problem. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a stochastic population-based optimizer, originally inspired by the social behavior of fish schools and bird flocks. PSO is ...

Moment tensor and stress inversion for an active fault system in west part of Lut-Block, Iran

Iran is one of the most tectonically active regions on the Alpine-Himalayan earthquake belt. Eastern Iran, nowadays, is one of the most active regions of the country. The occurrence of several destructive earthquakes during the past 50 years provides the evidence for the seismic activity in this region. The earthquakes are mostly concentrated around the Lut-block. There are strike-slip fault sy...

Some Aspects about Seismology of 2012 August 11 Ahar-Vaezaghan (Azarbayjan, NW of Persia) Earthquakes Sequences

In 2012 August 11 (12:23 UTC) a moderate earthquake with MW=6.4 (USGS) occurred between Ahar and Varzaghan towns in Azarbayjan Province at northwest of Iran. After eleven minutes another earthquake shook the area with MW=6.2 (USGS). These consecutive earthquakes followed by intensive sequences of aftershocks whereas the strongest one had MW=5.3 (USGS). In data processing including depth modific...
